One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish
The Simpsons Season 02 Episode 11
EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS
Seriously, Lisa, since when is anybody in your family trying to teach you to be open-minded and try new things? Homer calls her out on it.
Ah, the great pig scare of '87. I remember that.
How many drunken Japanese businessmen frequent Springfield karaoke bars.
This episode actually predates the original Iron Chef by two years. Mmm, now I want to watch Iron Chef. I think they drew Homer eating the nigiri with his hands as a sign of his uncouthness. Turns out, Homer was right to do so.
I forgot all about Bart and Lisa doing the theme song to Shaft! How do those two know the lyrics to that song anyway?
Ew, the master chef is making it with Mrs. Krabappel in the back of her car.
I wonder if there actually exists in some doctor's office a pamphlet called, "So you're going to die". I sure hope not.
Homer's handwriting seems to have markedly improved from when Principal Skinner was comparing handwriting samples between Bart's and Homer's. His spelling? Not so much.
Bart immediately assumes Homer's going to spank him. How old is too old for your dad to smack you these days, anyway? I'm pretty sure this scene would not have made it to the air if it had been live action. Homer teaches Bart the three little sentences that will get him through life:
- Cover for me.
- Oh, good idea, boss!
- It was like that when I got here.
I don't think anybody taught me how to shave. I'm pretty sure I still don't do it correctly. Homer's stubble pops right back into place. We see this happen in other episodes, too. It's great.
I love how composed Homer is about his own death. I'd like to think that I'd be willing to play a prank regarding my own death, too.
He has to cross out having cold ones with his pals, planting a tree, and hang gliding to hang out with Abe. I guess I can support those decisions.
Ugh, do cops really do feel they have the right to arrest you just for being rude? I wouldn't be surprised if they do.
Bart's prank call coinciding with the exact time Homer calls is such a tragedy. Speaking of Bart, why can't Homer think of anything nice to say about him?
Living life to the fullest: eating pork rinds (light!) while watching bowling on TV. I can't say I agree with Homer completely, but I can't say I disagree completely either.
CONCLUSION
I love this episode. Homer may be a lovable idiot and the butt of the entire Simpsons joke, but he's also got depth. Here we see what he would do on his last day on Earth, and his choices are as good as any man's. I rate this episode among the classics.

PLOT SUMMARY FROM WIKIPEDIA
Homer takes his family to the new sushi bar, The Happy Sumo. After sampling most of the items on the menu, he tries a type of sushi called fugu. The chef in charge is busy having sex with Edna Krabappel, so his apprentice has to slice the fugu, of which certain parts are toxic. The apprentice tries to do it carefully, but Homer starts yelling impatiently, and disturbing the apprentice and forcing him to serve it. Homer considers it a treat, but the chef soon returns and finds that the fish has not been prepared correctly and tells Homer that he may have been poisoned. Homer and Marge go to the hospital, where Dr. Hibbert informs Homer he is indeed very likely to die and has twenty-four hours left to live. At night with Marge by his side, he decides not to tell his children about the bad news and makes a list of all the things he wants to do before he dies.
On his last day, after oversleeping, Homer attempts to do all the things on his list. He has a man-to-man talk with Bart, listens to Lisa play her saxophone, and borrows Flanders's camcorder to make a video for Maggie that she can look at when she is older. Homer finally reconciles with his father Abe, which takes up far more time than he expects and forces him to give up doing some of the things on his list. After trying to catch up on time he lost doing these things, Homer is arrested for speeding. He calls Barney, who is asked to pay $50 to bail him out. Leaving jail and with not much time left, he tells off his boss Mr. Burns and has one last drink at Moe's Tavern with his friends, causing him to miss dinner with his waiting family. He then hurries home in time to say goodbye to his children and make love to Marge.
At midnight, Homer quietly gets out of bed, visits each family member, who are all asleep, and says goodbye. Feeling glum, he goes to the living room and listens to Larry King read the Bible on tape. The tape plays out to which suddenly his head drops and it appears he has succumbed to the poison. Marge awakens the next morning and is panicked that her husband is not by her side. She runs downstairs and finds Homer, collapsed in the armchair. As she mourns, she realizes that his drool is still warm. She wakes him up and drums in the fact that he is alive. Homer then prances around in an overjoyed state and vows to live life to its fullest. In typical Homer fashion, he is soon back on the couch watching a bowling tournament and eating pork rinds.
