Principal Charming

The Simpsons Season 02 Episode 14

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS

I want to go to Greasy Joe's Bottomless BBQ Pit. Why is Marge exercising in the kitchen? Ha. Six servings of pork a week is a lot of pork. Homer totally can't limit himself to that. I'd never noticed that Patty and Selma's hair is different before. Ha Selma also has 'S' earrings on. Ouch Lisa. That stat is tough. Interesting they let them smoke in the house and around the kids.

Ew. Patty truly is disgusting. Maybe more so than Homer. Finding a husband for Selma is probably the hardest thing Homer has ever had to do. Honest, caring? Well off? And handsome? "Why should she have a better husband than Marge does?" Homer asks. Karl is too attractive? Bart is a moron for writing his own name. Ick. Seafood burritos at the Kwik-E-Mart? Pros: Nice stride! Cons: Complete stranger. Pros: Smoker. Cons: Just a sign.

Why does Moe always fall for the phone gag when it's the same drunks there all the time? Pretty sweet though that Homer's work phone number is the bar. "These pants come off at night just like everyone else's." Where's Skinner's mother at this point? "Here we go, boy meets beast." Homer thinks as Patty offers Skinner some hors d'ouvres.

"You know, food tastes better when you're revolving" Skinner tells Patty at the revolving restaurant. Meanwhile at the Space Mutants 5: Land Down Under screening Skinner and Patty enjoy knowing they hate the same things. Later that week the school is in ruins, Bart has taken over as the owner and proprietor. "I am still a wiener" graffiti portrait of Skinner references the first episode of this season. Selma dates Barney Gumble as a final resort "It's time to give away my love, like so much cheap wine." After Skinner proposes to Patty she lets slip that she loves him and he shouts "Callooh! Callay!" (from the Jabberwocky?) Note to self, incorporate into daily speech patterns. Finally Patty decides to save Selma from Barney and things are set right at the school as Skinner no longer takes Bart's crap.

CONCLUSION

I don't know. I feel like this should be a classic episode but I just hate Patty and Selma so much it's tough to give this anything more than a meh.

PLOT SUMMARY FROM WIKIPEDIA

Selma realizes that she needs to find a husband and begs Marge to help her. Marge enlists the help of Homer to seek one out; however, Homer has trouble finding anyone suitable. Meanwhile, Bart pulls a big prank by pouring the fictional chemical sodium tetrasulfate onto the grass of his school. Homer meets with Principal Skinner about Bart's behavior and, learning that Skinner is single, invites him home to dinner with Selma. Later that day, Skinner arrives for dinner, but instead of falling for Selma, he becomes instantly smitten with her sister, Patty.

Skinner starts to go out with a slightly unwilling Patty, much to Selma's increasing chagrin. Skinner enlists Bart's help to get Patty to marry him, while Homer fixes a date between Selma and Barney, which Selma reluctantly accepts. Skinner takes Patty to the top of the bell tower to propose. Following Bart's lead, he has written "Marry Me, Patty" in 40-foot letters using the sodium tetrasulfate that got Bart in trouble. Patty is flattered, but declines. She admits to Skinner that she shares a common bond with the emotional grief of her twin sister, which Skinner immediately understands. Patty appreciates Skinner's understanding and his gentlemanly conduct, and if she ever did settle down with a man, she would want it to be with him. Rescuing Selma from her date with Barney, Patty takes her home. Meanwhile Skinner, whom vowed to win back his school from Bart's control (who was taking advantage of the fact that Skinner loves Patty and turned a blind eye from all of Bart's recent vandalism). He destroys all the grass on the school field with the sodium tetrasulfate; forcing Bart to replant the field seed by seed.

The episode was written by David M. Stern and directed by Mark Kirkland. Stern particularly liked writing episodes about Marge and her sisters Patty and Selma. Executive producer Mike Reiss said none of the staff members could relate on a personal level to the twins, but Stern "seemed to really hook in to them, so he did some great episodes featuring members of the Bouvier family."[4] Due to the episode's romantic theme, the airdate was pushed back to Valentine's Day on February 14, 1991. It was, however, ready to be aired several months earlier.[4]
